Cranberry Orange Sippers

Since Christmas decorations are up in the stores {not our house!}, I think it is safe to talk turkey now!

What is it about Thanksgiving that is so wonderful? I think it is a chance to really hear others talk about the blessings in their lives. A chance to be grateful no matter what the circumstances...because I am sure that if you took out a piece of paper and pen...you could fill it up pretty quickly.

We have this punch every.single.year. It doesn't matter if we are HOME or somewhere else. It comes right along with us.

I have gotten quite a few e-mails with readers who are frustrated with my ingredient list. I am VERY sorry. I will really try to be a bit more sensitive to this.

THANKSGIVING PUNCH:

Cranberry Juice

Orange Juice {Do your family and friends a favor...NO PULP! THEY don't like it!}

Ginger Ale/Champagne

Directions:

Freeze cranberry juice in ice cube trays...or whatever shape you would like {IKEA has had some fun molds!} Make sure whatever shape you use, that they fit in the glasses you will be using! {BEEN there, DONE THAT!}

Before dinner or during appetizer time {if that is what you do} drop frozen cranberry cubes into glasses. Fill glasses with half OJ and half Ginger ALE/Champagne! It is simply BE.U.TEE.FUL as the cranberry juice swirls as it melts! :)

If you are planning a holiday brunch, you may want to try the "fancy Mimosas"!

ENJOY!

Jami's Ginger Juice Concentrate

Last week I was invited to my friend, Jami's Pampered Chef Party. Any excuse to get together, really. She served this punch that was so good! She substituted cranberry juice for whatever other juice was called for {BRILLIANT!} and she skipped the wine and added 7UP to the punch so that there was an option for those who do not consume alcohol. {AGAIN, BRILLIANT!}

If you have been reading this blog long enough, you know how much I love ginger and cranberries. Not just because they are so delicious, but because of all the medicinal benefits as well. YES! They are THAT good for you!

As I was preparing my gourmet dinner for my twinsie last Friday, I began experimenting with the recipe, knowing full well Laur would give me her honest opinion without me even having to ask. That is also another reason everybody needs a twinsie!

After making a couple of different batches, I decided to just make a Ginger Juice Concentrate and offer different combos. SO, here is the basic recipe and the combos are endless!

Jami's Ginger Juice Concentrate:
Tweaked a bit from Jami

1 {11.5 Fluid OZ.} Langers Frozen Cranberry Juice Concentrate
1 piece of fresh ginger about 4 inches long
2 cans San Pellegrino Limonata...I put a bit less so it would fit in my glass bottle. OR 2 cans of 7UP...{I TRY TO AVOID HFCS, SO I PREFER THE LIMONATA}
4 limes, juiced

Directions:
*Thaw juice;

*Peel outside of ginger and chop into small pieces; {If you have a food chopper...dig it out and use it!}

*Combine juice and ginger in a small saucepan;

*Bring to a boil. Let cool a bit;

*Let sit in fridge overnight...if you have time. If you are not a ginger fan...DO NOT LET IT SIT OVERNIGHT. You wont be happy. You will not like me. You will most likely e-mail me and let me know how horrible it is. :) OR worse... you will not love JAMI...who is the sweetest! :)

*Strain ginger and place juice concentrate in a glass bottle.

*Squeeze juice of 4 limes and add to strained juice.

ADD LIMONATA OR 7UP

THAT IS IT! EASY AS PIE!

VARIATIONS:

Fill cup with ice.

Pour 1/2 glass with plain seltzer water. Top off with Ginger Juice Concentrate.

Pour 1/2 glass with orange juice. Top off with Ginger Juice Concentrate.

Pour 1/2 glass with San Pellegrino Limonata {available at Costco}. Top off with Ginger juice Concentrate.

Pour 1/2 glass with Hansen's Natural Soda Mandarin Lime. Top off with Ginger Juice Concentrate.

Pour 1/2 glass with Schloss Biebrich Sekt {sparkling wine}. Top off with Ginger Juice Concentrate.

Enjoy! Thank you, Jami for the fun night and for the most delicious food!

and thank you, Laur for being my {self-appointed} official taste tester!

Homemade GINGER ALE...and a bit of this and that

Okay, ladies...and maybe a few gentlemen...this blog is NOT all about food. REALLY. It just so happens that the few regular posts I have been working on are taking me forever. I can NOT seem to get it all on paper or in draft form without getting weapy. Life is changing so fast {I know. I know. Welcome to the real world!} and there are sooo many things I want to share with you that testify to an ALMIGHTY GOD. My heart is bursting to the brim with such gratitude that I just need to figure out how to put it into words. Imagine that! I do know this, as I have been writing, I have been reminded that even in the wost of circumstances, our Lord's hand WILL MOST DEFINITELY hold us securely. What a relief to know that all we have to do is trust Him and let Him worry about it.

I have been camped out in Romans lately and it has been so convicting. I think I need to read Romans 12 every day for the rest of my life, because, for some reason, I am not GETTING.IT. Like not just reading about it, but actually BEING sincere, hating evil, clinging to what is good...etc. Really does no good to not act on it.

Here is a small portion for you to read:

"Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality."
Hebrews 12:9-14

What do you think? Plenty of homework, huh?

Back to Ginger Ale.

The ginger root is very healthy for you and is used to help treat nausea. It is also very inexpensive!

You could make the syrup, put it in a bag along with cups, straws, mineral water, a few baby limes, a sleeve of saltines and maybe a magazine...a thoughtful "get well soon" gift.

OOOOR, you could make up a batch, have a friend over for a ginger ale instead of sweet tea ...and practice hospitality!

Happy Wednesday!

Orange Blueberry Strawberry Smoothie

This morning was so beautiful...and it is going to be about 90* which is HOT for us. So this morning it was smoothies and pancakes for breakfast.

It is worth every bit of berry picking when you can whip up one of these nutritious drinks...for those of you who really don't care to pick the berries! :}

Orange Blueberry Strawberry Smoothies
Lisa Pearson

Ingredients:

2 cups orange juice {I like Florida's Natural}

2 cups frozen blueberries

1 cup frozen strawberrries {I freeze these sliced}

1 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice or ITALIAN VOLCANO LEMON JUICE...my new obsession.

Directions:

*Pour juice to 2 cup mark in blender.

*Add frozen fruit and lemon juice and blend away until your smoothie is thick and frothy looking.

*Makes two large smoothies or 4 small ones.

Pour into pretty glasses and enjoy...or pour into to-go cups and sip away as you do your yard work, run your errands, carpool the kiddies around or put your feet up while babies nap!

Soda Fountain Bar

Do you ever have one of "those" days? It is supposed to be exciteng and fun and everybody else seems to be doing great, but you are doing everything in your might to keep from tearing up?

Today was the end-of-the-year picnic at my son's school and I was wondering if I should go in the first place. I knew if I didn't I would be a wreck all week having regretted it...sooo I went for very selfish reasons. VERY SELFISH!

The "child" was on his way to the store with friends to get an icee...so, we pulled off in the parking lot and he drove down the road, hopped out and joined the other friends who were already there, then I drove back to the school to join my daughter who was there to enjoy the festivities of her brother's last day of school and she was talkking to an old coach of hers. I sat and talked to a few moms, and left the school in tears! SO.NOT.FUN! Oh for the days when the little ones would sit with me! As I was driving home, God brought comfort to me in knowing that I should be THANKFUL that they have friends to walk with, coaches who have been significant influences in their lives...that they are healthy and independent enough to carry on without having to have me close by. After all, that is what Momma birdies do...they nurture their young until they are independent enough to be strong on their own. I so look forward to what God is doing in each of them and I know that life is changing dramatically, but let me tell you...they will never be too old for holding my hand, kisses and hugs...prayer time at night and good-morning kisses.

So...tonight, we are not having our traditional last day of school dinner again, but we will be having an Soda Fountain Bar at some time tonight to celebrate what lies ahead. It may not be until midnight, and it may not be just the four of us...but a celebration is in order to celebrate yet another school year of God's AMAZING faithfulness.

***********************************************************************************

Soda fountain bars have been a family favorite now for years. They started off as a great alternative to soda pop and all the high fructose corn syrup, but over time, they have become a great thing to serve at parties! You would be surprised how many friends really mingle and talk as they exchange ideas and conversation over making their own drinks. {If you are finding it hard to justify purchasing the syrups just for a soda fountain bar, the syrups are great on waffles, crepes and pancakes, too!}

SOOOO, there is nothing wrong with a large tub of soda pop, water, crocks brimming with fresh lemonade and sweet tea, but you may want to mix it up a bit and do something that is way fun and an unexpected thing for your next celebration, your family's pizza night, or Taco Tuesday...

This is what you will need:

flavored Syrup {We like Monin, Torani, and DaVinci }

club soda {sparkling water, seltzer water, mineral water, carbonated water, fizzy water...everybody has a different name for it!} :}

ice

cups with domed lids {cash and carry}...so you can have mounds and mounds of whipped cream goodness!

straws

whipped cream {flavored ones are also fun to make!}

*It also helps to put out a little sign with direction to get them started! They will all be experts by the end of the evening. {I have one sign that I keep to put out when we serve them...but you can easily make a fancy schmancy one for a special occasion with your theme}

*The other advantage to serving Italian Cream Sodas is that there really is no need to make dessert,too! WOO HOO!

*I am almost done rambling on. {remember...my kiddies are not home this afternoon...to ramble on to, so I get to ramble on and on to whomever will listen!} The soda fountain bar may be kept simple or you can really deck it out for a party. We served these at a wedding reception and it was HUGE success! The flavors can be written on a large chalkboard for fun and you can use colored cups and straws to carry the theme. Think bridal showers, baby showers, graduation parties or what about for FATHER'S DAY???! For those who are not wanting to waste or use plastic, we have served them in the small Starbucks Frappucino Mocha bottles...no need for ice if everything is chilled...darling. That's it. DONE. Silence. Time to hop on over to the next blog...or start your evening of celebrating the last day of school!

For Christmas gifts...wrapped biscotti, red and white paper straws and napkins, and everything else you would like to include in your soda fountain gift can be placed in a large white bag with mini pom poms glued across the top and a large J.I.N.G.L.E bell tied to the handles!

Love to ALL of YOU!

Hospitality is...Lemonade

Have you ever walked into somebodys home...even to quickly drop off something...and been offered a drink of water or a cup of tea? It is the most welcome and kind guesture anybody could offer a guest. Even if you are on the run, it is the thought that counts! It is one way of saying: "Stay. I care about you. How are you?"

When you have guests in your home...YES, even family!!!! It is your chance to comfort and to offer hospitality. It is your opportunity to love and to listen. I know. We all have days where we are running a million directions, trying to balance family, friends, sports, laundry, grocery shopping, work, dental appointments and everything else, but it is vital that we stay in the WORD so that at any given time, we are able to offer comfort to those who enter our homes...even if we feel like we have nothing to offer!
Remember, sometimes we just need to listen!

Here is a little assignment for us. I am not telling you what to do...but I want you to see how great it feels to do something very simple in offering the next person who graces your home with a drink, okay? What do you think? Are you up for it? I'm doing the same thing!

Let's make it fun! Since picnic season is here...it will serve two purposes.

READY?

Now remember, we are anticipating. That means we are planning for and looking forward to someone dropping in. SO, since my dishwasher always seems to be full...and not everybody likes drinking water or lemonade out of champagne flutes...I love to fill glass jars. {My friends always give me grief for my glass jars, but hey...!} Mason jars are great or you may recycle other glass jars, too. Go ahead and fill them with ice water or whatever else you would like.

A half gallon of Newman's Own Lemonade is less than $2 and it fills about 7 pint jars. I fill the jars with ice, top it off with lemonade, add a slice of lemon and a sprig of mint {thank you, Jess!} I screw the lids on and put them all in a glass 9X13 pan, so they are ready to go. This eliminates sticky bottoms all over the fridge.

Have your children help you with this. It is a great way of letting them know that you will be exercising "hospitality" to your guests by offering them a drink. This is the perfect time to explain hospitality to them. They will become hospitality minded very quickly!

Having these drinks ready will also be great to grab before sports activities picnics or for your children to offer their friends. Another thing I do...which saves on glasses is to have punched tags {I make them out of scrap paper!} available...that way, when your children are done with their drinks, they can mark them with their initial or name and keep it cold in the fridge for later use!

SO, if it is water, lemonade or iced tea you will be serving...the most important thing is that you will be SERVING, comforting and caring!

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God."

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

IF YOU LIVE IN THE AREA: I will be offering a HOMEMAKING 101 CLASS on Thursday, MAY 26th from 7-9. The class is $20 and I have four spots left. The topic for the evening is PICNIC PACKIN'. I am really excited about this. It will be a fun evening of ideas, snacks, recipes and a couple of drawings! Please e-mail me for the details! Hope you can join us!

Thanksgiving Punch {Cranberry&Orange}

Happy Four days before Thanksgiving!

What a weekend of Thanksgiving this has been!

I wont go into detail, but Rissa's honey showed up to surprise her on Friday night! Yep, he called us that morning to let us know he was on his way home. :)

Coordinating with her roommate, {smart guy!} he had it all figured out. We met him at the airport along with his family and we got to be on "THE VERY BIG DEAL"!

We are blessed!

Please keep this very special young man in your prayers as he will be leaving for South Korea...to serve our AMAZING country along with so many others who are willing to fight to keep the freedoms we still have!

We have this punch every.single.year. It doesn't matter if we are HOME or somewhere else. It comes right along with us.

I have gotten so many e-mails with readers who are frustrated with my ingredient list. I am VERY sorry. I also use a KITCHEN AID stand mixer and lots of Demarle products and TRADER JOES. I will really try to be a bit more sensitive to this.

THANKSGIVING PUNCH:

Cranberry Juice

Orange Juice {Do your family and friends a favor...NO PULP! THEY don't like it!}

Ginger Ale/Champagne

Directions:

Freeze cranberry juice in ice cube trays...or whatever shape you would like {IKEA has some fun star molds!} Make sure they fit in the glasses you will be using! {BEEN there, DONE THAT!}

Before dinner or during appetizer time {if that is what you do} drop frozen cranberry cubes into glasses. Fill glasses with half OJ and half Ginger ALE/Champagne! It is simply BE.U.TEE.FUL as the cranberry juice melts! :)

Soda Fountain Gift

How many of you remember the craze of Soda Fountains? Raspberry Flips, Pink Sodas and Patio Punch Soda's were all the rage. Well, here is a fun, frugal way to give an Italian Cream Soda to go as a gift.

This can be given as a shower gift, a graduation gift {teenagers love these!}, a birthday gift, a teachers gift etc.

They are great baby shower gifts as well. It is fun for the Momma-to-be to be able to take something home for the rest of the family or hubby to enjoy as well. You could even include a gift certificate for a pizza to be enjoyed on a day where cooking is not at the top of the "to do" list.

These Italian Cream Soda gifts are very fun to embelish. You can use colors or a theme to customize the gift.

As mentioned before we are talking FRUGAL, so I made mine for under $10.00.
white gift bag: .79 {Party Depot}
2 12x12 sheets of scrapbook paper: $1.00 {Paper Zone}
napkins: $1.00
straws: $1.00 at the Dollar Store {on hand}
cups: $1.00 {the Dollar Store}
Torani Syrup: $3.99 {Cash-n-Carry}
Club Soda: .87 with deposit {Winco}

Ribbon I had on hand.

DIRECTIONS:

Club Soda:
Cut scrapbook paper into 6x6 square.
Remove label from Club Soda.
Glue 6x6 sheet on to Club Soda bottle being sure to cover any leftover residue from original label.

Drink Tags:
Use any size craft punch and punch drink tags out of scrap paper from cutting down your 6x6 sheet of paper.
Punch a small hole with a regular sized hole punch for straw.

Straws:
Place a handful of straws into standard cellophane bag or tie together with ribbon.

Italian Cream Soda Label:
Cut second sheet of 12x12 paper into 8 1/2X11.
Print label with Italian Soda directions.

I put enough for 8 into each package, but always more straws. They are inexpensive and fun to have extras. Can one ever have too many straws?

Suggestions if you are NOT on a budget:

*Add a glass straw dispenser with colorful straws.

*Add cookies or biscotti to carry the Italian theme.

*Add an ISI whipped cream maker...you get the idea!

For Christmas: make it fancy with silver and gold decorations.

For a whimsical Christmas gift, you could include red and white striped straws, napkins and homemade biscotti etc. HAVE FUN!

Enjoy!

Old Fashioned Wassail

Posted by Picasa

Ingredients:
2 cans frozen cranberry juice
1 gallon apple cider
1 orange sliced into 8 rings
1 lemon sliced into 4 rings

Spice packet:
6 whole cloves
12 whole allspice cloves
3 cinnamon sticks

Place ingredients in crockpot for at least 4 hours before you plan on serving it. Place 4 orange rings, 2 lemon slices, and spice packet into wassail while preparing drink.

Remove orange slices and lemon slices and replace them with fresh fruit rings right before you serve it. That way it tastes so good, but the fruit isn't falling apart.

Note:
I buy cloth spice packages at Cost Plus!
